Where San Diego’s kids make musical memories
What is Songbirds Music?
Since 2008, Songbirds Music is proud to provide a safe and nurturing place, a nest really, where families and friends with little ones (ages birth to age 5) gather to learn, grow, and connect through music, movement, and play in a fun, non-performance, informal yet supportive environment.
What you’ll see in our classes:
- A community of families sharing songs, instrument play, rhythm chants, and movement activities in a relaxed, playful, non-performance-oriented setting.
- Music learned through developmentally appropriate activities that support and respect the unique learning styles of every child.
- Infants, toddlers and preschoolers participating at their own levels and learning from one another in family-style classes.
- Parents/caregivers contributing to the enrichment of their child’s music environment regardless of their own musical abilities.
- New friends, families, and highly trained teachers who can’t wait to connect with you.
Our Goals:
- Nurture each child’s natural enthusiasm for music and movement
- Provide a non-judgmental, inclusive, warm, learning environment for your family
- Teach you how to use music in your daily lives
- Provide a solid foundation for life-long music making
- Learning new songs every semester featuring great arrangements of original and traditional songs in a variety of tonalities, meters, languages, and cultural styles.
- Meet new friends and create a community of kind and cultured music-makers.
- Have fun!
Meet the Teachers
Ms. Diana
Hello and hola, I’m Ms. Diana!
Former bilingual elementary school teacher turned early childhood music specialist and mama bird!
Although I am an introvert, I am serious about being silly and I do spontaneously break out into song or lightly choreograph television commercial jingles.
I love to sit on the floor with little ones and their loving grownups while tapping to the beat and sharing why music, movement, and play is a basic life skill and how to use the magic of music on the daily to connect to the people we love and the world around us.
Patient, warm, nurturing, I am a proud Mama Bird who loves her two girls, her husband, and her poodle mystery named Fozzie.
I am fanatical about Flamenco, love traveling, stand-up comedy, music from the 50s and 60s, and I think most life lessons can be learned on Sesame Street.
As an auntie, mom, and bilingual educator of more than 20 years I am passionate about creating a safe and flourishing nest for families – familias – with a song and a smile. ¡Ole!
“My daughter and I have just reenrolled for our second set of classes with Miss Diana. We feel so lucky to have found such a brilliant class. Diana is an excellent and talented teacher, she has a natural gift of teaching children of all ages and abilities and keeps them engaged throughout each class. Thank you Diana!”
I hold an M.Ed. from the University of Virginia in Curriculum and Instructional Design, a BA from the University of California, Los Angeles in World Arts and Cultures, and a BLCAD (Bilingual, Cross-Cultural, Language and Academic Development) teaching credential. I served as a bilingual and Spanish Immersion elementary school teacher for 10+ years in San Diego, Salinas, and Arlington, VA. I successfully completed the Music Together Teaching Workshop developed by the Center for Music and Young Children, Princeton, New Jersey in Alexandria, Virginia in 2007 and her Music Together Certification Level 1 in 2013. I am also a certified Canta y Baila Conmigo® Master teacher (Spanish Language and Music Program). I am CPR and First Aid certified.
Ms. Diana in three words: Mama, patient, gentle

What kinds of things will we do in class?
In class we sing, dance, chant and play along with instruments to a variety of musical styles, melodies, tonalities and rhythms. You and your child will also participate and experience creative movement, improvisation, finger play and lap
songs. Most important of all, we have fun while creating a rich and lively musical community
May I bring my three-year-old as well as my 10-month-old to the same class?
Not only may you, but we encourage it! Research shows that preschoolers learn
best in a mixed-age environment. The little ones learn by watching and imitating
the older children. The older children love being the “big sibs” and showing the
little ones how it is done. This family-style learning environment facilitates
participation and involvement in the music for every child, at whatever
developmental stage they may be.
What happens after we complete a semester?
There are nine Music Together song collections and a growing number of Canta y Baila Conmigo song collections. A different song collection is used each semester, so when you register for your next semester, you can look forward to new songs and chants, taught with the same kinds of activities plus a brand new songbook. Because your child will be at a different place developmentally, an activity will be exciting to them whether it is because of its familiarity or because they can grasp it in a new way
What is my role as the parent/caregiver?
Because you are your child’s most important role model, they will learn best by watching you and listening to you. Your participation as a music-maker
is vital to your child’s developing love of music. Plus, music class is so much fun – sing out!
How many adults can attend with my child/children?
We are all about family music making. That means, mom, dads, spouses, partner, grandparents, aunties, uncles are ALL welcome!
NOTE: Cousins and Nanny shares must register separately
Why aren't there separate classes for different age groups?
In the 1980s, Music Together pioneered the development of the mixed-age approach in early childhood music. In each class we strive to create a musically rich, developmentally appropriate environment where the whole family can enjoy
music and nurture skills at the level right for each child. Mixed-age classes also provide a rich learning environment because children of different ages thrive
when they interact with each other; this approach is based on research from music education, early childhood development, and family relationships, as well
as our years of experience in the field.
Where are your classes?
Our studio (aka the Nest) is located in Point Loma/Liberty Station inside the Dorothea Laub Dance Place (2650 Truxtun Road #109 San Diego, 92106)
Can I switch between the Music Together and Canta y Baila Conmigo Program? Is there a fee to switch?
The short answer is, yes! Space permitting you can switch to a different program. To make the change, contact director@songbirdsmusic.com. You will be charged $42 service fee.
Music Together and Canta y Baila Conmigo are two completely different programs, each with their own music, family support materials, and class structure. This service fee will be collected by Songbirds Music but immediately passed onto the program you are switching into.
We will happilly accomodate the change but cannot absorb the cost as a licensee.
Where are Songbirds Music classes located?
Liberty Station (NTC) 2650 Truxtun Road #109 inside the Dorothea Laub Dance Place building next to The Lot on the corner of Truxtun and Dewey Road.
Is there parking onsite?
Parking lot entrance is on Dewey Road (Lot P). You can also park in lot R (across from Dance Place) or on the street. There is a stroller ramp on Dewey Road right outside of the studio. Please arrive early to allow time to park, walk, check-in, and settle into the space.

Is my child too young for music class?
All children are musical. The same way that a child has the innate ability to speak and understand their native language, they also have the ability to do the same with the language of music. Do you wait to talk to your child until you are sure they can answer you back? They talk when they are ready, because they have been immersed in a language from birth. They walk when they are ready because they have felt your movement while in your arms. Giving a child this same kind of
immersion in musical experiences will provide them opportunities to not only learn to sing in tune and keep a steady beat, but to develop their own special way of expressing music through movement.
I am tone deaf! Won't I ruin my child musically if I sing to him/her/they?
No! We promise that you will not hurt your child’s musical abilities by singing to them, even if you are not always in tune. They will hear plenty of “in tune” music through other mediums, but your voice and your presence are most precious to them. What you (and/or other primary caregivers) do, they want to do too. Although we, as teachers, are able to help your child learn skills, your child must
gain the positive disposition toward active music-making from you.
My child just sits there in class (or my child just wanders around in class). Is my child bored?
There are many different learning styles. Some children may be visual learners who need to watch before they experiment on their own. Others are aural learners who are listening, even when they are across the room. Kinesthetic learners need
to move! Tell a kinesthetic learner that they can’t move and you are actually hurting their learning process. Therefore, a child’s learning in class happens in a multi-layered way – through active participation, watching others move,
experimenting with instruments and even by just being there and listening to you sing. Instead of waiting for your child to do something in class, let yourself go
and do it yourself. Then, watch and listen to them at home, and you will seen and hear how much they are learning and absorbing in class.
My Child Won’t Sit Still in Class
You are in the right class! Let your children experience class in their own way! As long as your child is being safe, they are welcome to move about the space (or not!) however they please. Trust the process and your child. They will pick up a lot more than you think! (If your child needs redirection during class, the best thing you can do is GET UP AND DANCE WITH THEM! You are always welcome to step away for a quick break and return when your child is ready.
Can I use my cellphone in class?
Silence your cell phones, respect the privacy of the families and the teachers in class, be present! Snap the occasional picture or short video of your cutie in class. . Note: Our music and material is copywritten; long videos are not permitted! Please share these best practices with grandparents and class visitors. Tag us @songbirdsmusic
Pro tips to have the BEST class experience
- Arrive on time! This will help you and your child settle into class. Hearing the “Hello” song is important to your child!
- On your way to class, talk about where you are going, listen to your music on the way, and remind your toddlers to use walking and dancing feet in class – running can be unsafe and contagious in class!
- In class, be present, participate, keep it musical, and have fun!
- Catch up with your friends after class; talking in class can be disruptive to your child’s learning and to other people in the music space.
- Outside of class, listen to your music, use your songbooks, make up silly songs, share music you love with your little ones!
I see the current session has started, can I still join a class?
We highly recommend starting at the beginning of the session so that your child can get the most out of their music class experience. If there is space in the class you are interested in, you may join at a pro-rated rate. If the the class is full you may add yourself to the waitlist but selection the “Waitlist” button. Fingers crossed a spot opens for you…we’ll let you know ASAP if it does.
How do I sign up?
Look at our class schedule and find a time and location that works for you and
your child; then register. If you like, schedule a drop-in visit first!
What if I miss a class?
You can make-up any class you miss at any time within the same session. Use our online make-up scheduler to schedule your family’s make-up. One per family (even if you have more that one child enrolled in plenty)
